Many actors and directors have gotten their start in the horror genre, adding their names next to popular - or sometimes very unpopular - projects before launching into a major career. Jaume Collet-Serra, who is slated to direct Disney’s Jungle Cruise and the DCEU’s Black Adam in 2020 and 2021 respectively, got his start by directing 2005’s House of Wax. House of Wax was loosely based on two other films: 1953’s House of Wax and 1933’s Mystery of the Wax Museum....

What If…? showrunner Ashley Bradley has started that one episode of the series will see Black Panther become Star-Lord. The animated series was one of a number of new projects announced in July at San Diego Comic-Con, and will feature a framing device of Uatu the Watcher observing events in alternate universes and relating the stories of what he finds there. The series is based on the comics series of the same name, which saw various moments from the expansive history of Marvel Comics rewritten to explore alternate possibilities of events playing out, such as Thor becoming Galactus’ Herald, Spider-Man joining the Fantastic Four, Gwen Stacey surviving, and Doctor Doom being a hero....

Warning: SPOILERS for Black Panther ahead - It’s hard to overstate the importance of 2008’s Iron Man. The film didn’t just launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe; it also established so much of what would make the MCU successful. In terms of style, tone, and even specific character arcs, Iron Man established a pattern that Marvel has largely adhered to over the course of the last decade. That’s not a criticism. The reality is, Marvel Studios are very good at taking aspects of that formula, and subtly reworking them to create something fresh, new, and original....

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Shuri #2 Following the massive success of Black Panther, fan-favorite character Shuri (T’Challa’s genius of a little sister) has been given her own comic title in the Marvel Universe. But her first crossover with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Shuri #1 set up the basic state of things in Wakanda for this title - Black Panther is in charge, Shuri is doing her thing with inventions, and everyone is happy… especially as Wakanda is about to enter the space race....

Blackberry CEO John Chen has written a blog post criticizing Apple’s strong stance on the privacy of customer data, suggesting that BlackBerry’s own privacy commitment “does not extend to criminals.” Although he does not name Apple directly, Chen links to an arsTechnica piece in which a NY federal judge expressed displeasure at Apple’s position in a case involving an iPhone belonging to a suspected drug dealer. Apple uses end-to-end encryption for both iMessages and FaceTime, making it impossible for the company to decrypt these communications, and also introduced strong encryption of iOS devices in iOS 8, again leaving the company unable to access locked devices....

Strike one: News emerged today that RIM is climbing in with TiVo, developing software for the BlackBerry that could vastly improve the way the device links up with video content. The first jointly-developed software app should ship this year. Initially, BlackBerry smartphone users will gain the convenience of being able to discover what shows are on and schedule television recordings while away from the living room and on the go....

Boost Mobile, a prepaid subsidiary of Sprint, today announced pricing for its upcoming iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c launch next week. While the carrier previously announced that the device would arrive on Nov. 8, today it confirmed pricing for the two new iPhones will start at $100 off the usual retail price. Much like what’s on offer from another Sprint subsidiary, Virgin. Available for $100 off on every model, Boost Mobile will offer the iPhone 5s for $549/$649/$749 for the 16/32/64GB models, while the 16GB iPhone 5c will also be a $100 off at $449 and $549 price tags for the 32GB....

Blackberry has just announced (via Business Insider) that an investment firm has put in an offer for the company. At $9 a share, the deal is worth about 4.7 billion dollars in total. Fairfax already owns about 10 percent of Blackberry before the deal. Having an investment company buy Blackberry does not have a direct impact on the smartphone market. Often though, investment firms buy out companies with the aim of selling off assets separately....

Bond 25 is reportedly headed to Southern Italy to film a massive action sequence. The next installment in the long running 007 series sees Daniel Craig returning for his fifth go-around as British super-spy James Bond. True Detective season 1 helmer Cary Fukunaga has jumped aboard as director after Danny Boyle exited the film. Full casting details on the next Bond adventure are not yet known, but it has been reported that Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek is up for a villain role in the film....

Disney is currently running through all of their animated classics and giving them a live-action update that is now possible thanks to advancements in visual effects, and the fact that they know people will turn out in large crowds to see them. Maleficent and Cinderella both proved there was an audience for this, but it has been The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beasts’ recent box office domination that has shown that no property, no matter how beloved, will be deterred from being successful....

The NSM builds on the Biden Administration’s work to protect our Nation from sophisticated malicious cyber activity, from both nation-state actors and cybercriminals,” the White House said. The memorandum goes into detail about how the executive order applies to national security systems and provides timelines for implementing things like multifactor authentication, encryption, cloud technologies, and endpoint detection services....

Leaked concept art from Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) shows Harley celebrating her newfound emancipation with a new look. Margot Robbie’s take on the beloved DC character made her debut in Suicide Squad, and was one of the most widely-praised elements of the otherwise critically-derided movie. Warner Bros. began developing more projects with Harley in mind, starting with Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey movie....

Despite being geared towards female audiences, the opening weekend for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) had a mostly male audience. As the DCEU’s first R-rated film, Birds of Prey offers a raucous and colorful take on one of DC Comics’ famous female teams. It stars Margot Robbie, reprising her role as Harley Quinn from 2016’s Suicide Squad, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ella Jay Basco, Ewan McGregor, Chris Messina, and Rosie Perez....

Robin Wright and Ryan Gosling are at the forefront of this latest slew of images from this year’s Blade Runner 2049. In many ways, the film has more expectations surrounding it from audiences than almost any other film this year does, thanks to its status as the sequel to one of the most beloved and critically-acclaimed films of all time, 1982’s sci-fi noir from Ridley Scott, Blade Runner. Based on a screenplay by Michael Green (American Gods) and Hampton Fancher - who co-wrote the first film - Blade Runner 2049 promises to not only continue the story from the first film but also expand upon the mythology and characters of the Blade Runner world....

Bloomberg has today published its overview of Apple’s plans for the new iPhone lineup this year, largely reaffirming what the rumor mill has said up to now. Apple will reportedly launch three new iPhones in the fall, iterative successors to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and a new ‘top of the line’ iPhone 8 with an ‘overhauled’ design. Bloomberg details various prototypes for the radical new OLED iPhone with variations of curved glass and stainless steel chassis materials …...

Star Wars’ long-planned Boba Fett spinoff is reportedly back on the Lucasfilm docket and is slowly taking shape. After the success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the likely success of the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Disney subsidiary is planning to add to their anthology films with one that puts the popular bounty hunter at the forefront. Lucasfilm has been trying to move forward with a Boba Fett solo film for quite some time now, with Josh Trank previously attached to the project until it was shelved indefinitely....
