Casting news on Deadpool 2 continues to roll in, with confirmation of another key player from the first movie: Blind Al. The biggest Deadpool 2 casting update so far is, of course, Josh Brolin being tapped to play Cable, Deadpool’s mutant sidekick; a role that Brolin is already preparing for. The other big casting update concerns Zazie Beetz playing Domino, a mutant mercenary, opposite Brolin as Cable and Ryan Reynolds’ The Merc with a Mouth.
In addition to the actors who are hopping onboard the Deadpool train for the sequel, we have learned that Brianna Hildebrand is coming back to play Negasonic Teenage Warhead again. Morena Baccarin as Vanessa is also returning for the Deadpool sequel, and there is speculation that her character could take on the superhero guise of Copycat in the movie. As mentioned, however, they’re not the only returning players from the first Deadpool movie.
As confirmed by Black Film, Leslie Uggams is coming back to Deadpool 2 to reprise her role as Blind Al; Wade Wilson’s cocaine-sniffing, IKEA-assembling roommate. Black Film caught up to Uggams at the afterparty for HBO’s film The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and she confirmed her return in the role. Uggams costars in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks alongside Oprah Winfrey.
In the comic books, the relationship between Blind Al and Deadpool is incredibly complicated. Once upon a time, a pre-Deadpool Wade Wilson was supposed to kill Al but decided to let her live, and years later he captured her and turned her into his combination prisoner and housekeeper. In the film, Blind Al and Deadpool meet through a Craigslist ad, but their relationship does have some bizarre aspects reminiscent of the comics.
With the cast for Deadpool 2 swelling, it’s hard to see how they will have much time to expand on Blind Al or work in much of her backstory, so we should probably expect her character to remain in the background providing comic relief and possibly some amusing byplay with Deadpool’s pal Weasel (played again by T.J. Miller).
Deadpool 2 is being directed by David Leitch (John Wick) from a script co-written by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The first R-rated Deadpool movie was a massive hit for 20th Century Fox, taking in $730 million worldwide on a reported budget of $58 million. A Deadpool 2 teaser has already been shown, ahead of the Hugh Jackman Wolverine swansong Logan.
