The next trailer for Blade Runner 2049 will be arriving with, fittingly enough, the new movie from Blade Runner director Ridley Scott. With three-and-a-half decades between the release of Blade Runner and its sequel, fans are feeling the dueling emotions of optimism and trepidation. There’s the hope that the wait will be worth it and that fans will be rewarded with a rich and mind-blowing new story - and the worry that Blade Runner 2049 can’t possibly live up to the greatness of its predecessor.
Director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) certainly has some big shoes to fill. Scott crafted a masterpiece of sci-fi/noir with his original adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story, and the stakes are high. It helps that original stars Harrison Ford and Edward James Olmos are back onboard, alongside Ryan Gosling (La La Land) and Jared Leto (Suicide Squad). The Blade Runner 2049 teaser has quelled many of the fears fans had about the potential of the new film, though it revealed very little aside from a taste of the aesthetic. Some fans have held out judgment, preferring to wait for a full trailer, which can be seen in the most fitting way possible.
Scott confirmed in an interview with Washington Post that the Blade Runner 2049 trailer will play ahead of Alien: Covenant, giving fans their first real glimpse of the new movie. Scott, who serves as executive producer of Blade Runner 2049, has expressed some excitement over the impending debut, stating simply that, “[It] will be cool.”
It’s certainly a big moment for Scott, whose name was built off the backs of both Alien and Blade Runner. While the director has busied himself with spearheading the films meant to bridge the gap between Prometheus and Alien, he’s been heavily involved in bringing Blade Runner 2049 to life, and debuting the trailer in front of Covenant is as apt a tribute as you could hope for.
Hopefully, the new trailer will shed some light on some of the plot of Blade Runner 2049, the specifics for which have been kept light so far. What we know right now is that Gosling plays a new blade runner who uncovers a secret that leads him on a mission to find Ford’s Deckard, who’s been missing for many years.
Footage of Blade Runner 2049 wowed crowds last month at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and was considered to be one of the highlights of the Con’s presentations. How much of that footage makes it into the trailer is anyone’s guess, but if the description of the footage and the audience reaction is any indication, we can expect to be stunned by the preview and the world that it presents.
Still, great footage and a great trailer don’t necessarily mean the movie will be great. Some will no doubt be skeptical of the sequel no matter how great the trailer is. But with Villeneuve at the helm, and guidance from Scott, it seems safe to assume that Blade Runner 2049 will, at the very least, make a valiant effort to do justice by its predecessor.
