Marvel Studios’ Black Panther won the night at the 2018 Golden Trailer Awards. The trailer titled “Crown” won the top honor of Best In Show - one of the four awards Black Panther claimed in total.

The Golden Trailer Awards were created in 1999 by sisters Evelyn Brady-Watters and Monica Brady as a means of honoring excellence in feature-film trailer editing and the best movie marketing campaigns of each year. Awards are given to trailers in specific genres of film, such as action movies, comedies, dramas and documentaries. Though originally focused on film trailers, recent years have seen the Golden Trailers expand to presenting awards for short commercial trailers (i.e. TV Spots) and trailers for video games, books and television series. The Golden Trailers also offered special awards for movie posters and the Don LaFontaine Award for Best Voice Over, named in honor of the famous gravely voiced actor, who was known as the King Of Movie Trailers and for his distinctive catchphrase “In a world…”

Deadline reported on this year’s awards and Black Panther’s triumphant win of the top prize. In addition to Best In Show, the movie also won the awards for Best Action Trailer, Best Action TV Spot (For A Feature Film) and Best Music TV Spot (For A Feature Film). This last award was won by a trailer titled “Women of Wakanda.”

Tying for second among all the honorees with three awards each were the television series Stranger Things and Westworld. The former won the awards for Best Fantasy Adventure, Best Music and Best Sound Editing. The latter won the awards for Best Drama, Best Original Score and Best Trailerbyte. Call of Duty: WWII topped the video game categories, with three wins for Best Video Game Trailer, Best Video Game TV Spot and Most Innovative Advertising For A Video Game.

This is likely to be the first of many award wins for Black Panther, which has already shattered numerous box office records in defiance of traditional Hollywood wisdom. Disney has already invested heavily in a campaign to push Academy voters to throw their support behind a Best Picture nomination for the film at the 2019 Oscars. A less prestigious, but no less impressive accomplishment, is the film’s domination of the MTV Movie and TV Awards, where Black Panther topped the nominees list with seven total nominations. Hopes are high for the critically acclaimed film, though the Oscars are still the better part of a year away.
