Marvel’s Black Panther has been named by the National Board of Review as one of the best movies of 2018, along with nine other films. The winners of NBR’s annual awards, selected by more than 100 “film enthusiasts” based in and around New York City, have just been announced, with race drama Green Book declared the top film of the year.
There has been awards buzz for Black Panther ever since the movie arrived in theaters in February, grossing a massive $1.34 billion at the box office and scoring a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed), the movie stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa a.k.a. Black Panther, the newly-crowned king and protector of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, who is gifted with heightened strength, speed, and agility - as well as a pretty cool super-suit.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Black Panther has been listed by NBR as one of this year’s top films. Other titles included on the list are the Coen brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Bo Burnham’s directorial debut Eighth Grade, and If Beale Street Could Talk, the latest film from Barry Jenkins, who also directed the Academy Award Best Picture-winner Moonlight.
The 2018 movie awards season is now underway, with a series of annual awards all leading up to the Oscars in February 2019. The Oscars themselves have been through a bit of a controversy this year after the announcement of a new category: “outstanding achievement in popular film.” Many saw this as a way to boost the ceremony’s falling ratings by including mainstream successful movies - but without offering the prestige of being nominated for Best Film. In the wake of the backlash, the Academy said that the Popular Film category would not be included in the 2019 awards, as it “merits further study.”
The National Board of Review probably won’t be the last awards body to offer a nod to Black Panther, though the movie’s chances are hampered by the fact that it came out so long ago, and the fact that it’s a blockbuster superhero film rather than an intimate drama or biopic (the typical genre of awards-friendly movies). Still, even if the NBR is the only “top film” nod that Black Panther ends up getting, at least Marvel Studios will have that $1.34 billion to wipe away their tears.
