Chris Pratt sings praises for Black Panther, calling it a “thought-provoking movie.” Starring Chadwick Boseman, the film is the 18th installment of the famed MCU franchise and first out of the Marvel Studios gate for their 10th anniversary year. It reunites us with T’Challa, now that he is already the king and protector of his home country of Wakanda. Unfortunately, the start of his reign couldn’t get less ideal as he is forced to make a pivotal decision that would drastically change his people’s way of living moving forward.
Black Panther has been box office records since it rolled out Thursday night and it shows no signs of slowing down. Nabbing a $201.8 million at the domestic box office in its first three days, becoming the all-time highest opening weekend for February, eclipsing Deadpool’s 2016 three-day weekend record of $132.4 million. The Ryan Coogler-directed movie is expected to earn as much as $243 million after the four-day weekend, making it the second-best all-time just behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens and even surpassing Justice League’s total North America haul of $228.6 million. It’s also doing well internationally, already becoming the biggest opening day earner in the UK this year.
The Guardians of the Galaxy star posted on his official Twitter account to congratulate Boseman and the rest of the Black Panther crew for a well-made film, calling it “thought-provoking” and “Bond movie meets Shakespearean tragedy.” Boseman then graciously accepted the compliment. Pratt is the latest from the slew of personalities who have commended Black Panther including other Marvel celebrities like Captain America Chris Evans, Captain Marvel Brie Larson, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. Outside of the MCU bubble, Justice League star, Ray Fisher openly urged people to catch the film, proving once again there’s no heated rivalry between those who make DC and Marvel films. Meanwhile, iconic TV host Oprah and former First Lady Michelle Obama likewise praised the Coogler project for similar reasons.
That said, big names aren’t the only ones loving the Marvel flick. CinemaScore, a review aggregated site that surveys the general public immediately after seeing a flick, gave Black Panther an impressive A+. This makes the movie only the second superhero flick to nab the site’s highest honors after 2012’s The Avengers. Audience rating also mirrors critics’ opinion of the movie as the epic picture is currently the top-rated superhero movie in Rotten Tomatoes.
Black Panther may not be the first comic book film to put a black superhero at the forefront. But it’s the first one to garner this level of acclaim while also doing exceptionally well at the box office, squashing the long-running myth that films with a person of color lead will not be an easy sell. Further, the political and social subplots Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole incorporated easily relate to real-world problems, giving the film something genuinely worth pondering in addition to the usual Marvel superhero spectacle.
