The CW is currently bringing DC superhero fans five days of their favorite characters each week, with Monday through Thursday primetime airings of Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow, followed by the Friday release of the animated series Vixen online at CWSeed.
Vixen follows Mari McCabe (Megalyn Echikunwoke), who is able to channel the power and skills of animals using an ancestral totem necklace. Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) and The Flash (Grant Gustin) appeared in the show during season 1, and Vixen is now joined by several more familiar faces in season 2.
Since the new episodes of Vixen take place in an earlier timeline than the current season of Arrow, viewers have been treated to an appearance by Black Canary, a.k.a. Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), in episode 4 of the streaming series. As executive producer Marc Guggenheim explained to Comic Book, the character will be joining the “most requested” Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) in this mini “heist” film.
“[It is] an opportunity for us to see Laurel Lance and Ray Palmer as Black Canary and The Atom. It was so great. I mean obviously, every single cast member who we asked to participate said yes, and everyone was game for it. I think they were kind of tickled to do an animated version, and one of the fun parts about the project was when the designs came in for each of the characters, I sent them to the actors so they could see what their animated incarnations look like, and they got a kick out of it.”
It shouldn’t be too much of a shock for fans to see Laurel turning up on Vixen, as a death in the Arrowverse does not necessarily mean an end to the character–or at least all versions of it. Black Canary’s Earth-2 doppelganger, Black Siren, appeared in season 2 of The Flash. After signing on as a series regular across all the CW shows, Cassidy also appeared as Laurel in a flashback in Arrow’s season 5 premiere.
Vixen is as fun for viewers as it apparently is for the voice actors. The five-minute episodes are action- and character-packed stories, with more explosive magic and gravity-defying meta-powers than the limitations of live TV allow. Getting all the original actors to play their cartoon versions solidifies the show’s connection to the Arrowverse, and fans who lamented the untimely death of Laurel will enjoy the chance to see her Black Canary in action again.
