Warner Bros. releases the first official Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) movie trailer. In the early days of the DC Extended Universe continuity, Warner Bros. released two key world-building movies in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. The latter introduced a host of villains and anti-heroes to the burgeoning cinematic universe, but few were as well received as Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Now she’s set to return in Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, from a script by Christina Hodson. Though Birds of Prey isn’t a Suicide Squad sequel, it will continue Harley Quinn’s storyline and introduce more heroes to the DCEU.
In the upcoming DC Comics movie, Harley Quinn will be joined by heroes Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) as well as Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to help protect the young Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from the villainous Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina). Considering the return of Harley Quinn and the talent involved, the movie is highly anticipated, which Warner Bros. capitalized on with the theater-only Birds of Prey teaser tied to the theatrical release of IT Chapter Two. The teaser included the first official footage after a costume video released earlier this year when filming started. Birds of Prey reshoots were held late this summer as the film heads toward its February 2020 release date, and now the promotional campaign kicks into high gear with the first trailer.
Warner Bros. released the first official Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) trailer following the debut of the Birds of Prey poster. Check out the trailer below and a new look at the team in the image above.
The Birds of Prey trailer previews a fun female-led adventure set within the world of the DCEU. Although there is perhaps more Harley Quinn than the actual Birds of Prey team, it’s unclear whether that’s indicative of the actual film or simply the trailer. It certainly makes sense for Warner Bros. to use Harley Quinn and, by extension Robbie, to market the movie since the character is well known both from various animated DC projects and comics, but Robbie’s own version in Suicide Squad. However, it also appears the movie will largely focus on her as well. And there are sure to be fans who would prefer a movie that focused entirely on the Birds of Prey.
That said, it’s possible Warner Bros. could make a sequel that shifts the focus entirely to the Birds of Prey. The studio may be using Harley Quinn and her popularity as an entry point to introduce general audiences to the female-led DC comics team, with Huntress and Black Canary to take the lead in a sequel. If Birds of Prey is as well-received by fans and critics alike as this trailer has been, Warner Bros. may also opt to keep the female-led cast all together. Of course, what’s next for the Birds of Prey and Harley Quinn after this film is still a long way off. First, the movie will have to be a hit when it releases in theaters in February. For now, fans will have to make due with rewatching the Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on repeat to tide themselves over until the movie hits theaters.
