Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will give viewers more insight into Harley’s world than what was explored in Suicide Squad. Directed by Cathy Yan, with a script from Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey sees the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who originally made her debut in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad back in 2016. But, this time around she’s joined by a group of superheroes named Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), who team up to save young Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from a couple of villains named Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina).
Not only does the film boast an incredible cast, but its vibrant neon-lit color scheme shows how vastly different this production is from previous DC installments. Even though the promotional campaign for the film just recently kicked off with the first official trailer, it still remains one of the most talked-about films going into 2020. The trailer also focused more on Harley instead of the Birds of Prey team as a whole, which left many fans wondering if the upcoming film will mainly be centered on her. Although that question still remains to be answered, Robbie did explain that the film will give more insight into Harley’s world.
In an interview with Variety, while promoting her upcoming film Bombshell, Robbie briefly opened up about Birds of Prey and what fans can expect to see from Harley Quinn’s upcoming venture. She explained that the story is told from Harley’s point of view, so viewers “have an insight into Harley’s world” that wasn’t explored “in the first ‘Suicide Squad’ film,” nor what’s to be explored “in the next ‘Suicide Squad’ film.” She went on to add that it’s “a little bonkers” in that it, “reflects [Harley’s] personality. It’s heightened. It’s poppy, it’s fun, it’s violent, it’s crazy. It’s absurd. It’s kooky. It’s hilarious. It’s a little heartbreaking.”
Currently, Robbie is working on James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which officially started production back in September. Having Gunn at the helm has comforted many DC fans who were disappointed with 2016’s version. Joel Kinnaman, who is returning to the Suicide Squad cast as Rick Flag, even remarked that the film is far more comedic than before. But, while fans wait to see what hilarious madness Gunn has cooked up with DC, they have Birds of Prey not too far off on the horizon.
Robbie’s comments about how the film is from Harley’s perspective line up well with what was seen in the first trailer. All of the dramatic, vibrant, and hilarious moments throughout it give glimpses into Harley’s mind and what fans can expect to see on the big screen come February 7. Not only will her perspective help to liven up the gloomy tone that DC has set in their films over the years, but it’ll be fun to see this world through her eyes. Suicide Squad served as a great way to introduce Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn to the cinematic world, and Birds of Prey will be a fantastic way to expand upon it.
