Big Little Lies star Shailene Woodley may have just dropped a major spoiler for the show’s season 2 finale during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The second season of HBO’s hit drama has largely focused on how Woodley’s character Jane and the rest of the so-called Monterey Five - Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Renata (Laura Dern) and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) - have fared in the aftermath of the death of Celeste’s abusive husband Perry at the end of season 1.

Bonnie, who pushed Perry to his death down a flight of stairs, is almost at her breaking point, and about ready to confess her guilt. Celeste’s manipulative mother-in-law Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) is in town to get to the truth behind her son’s death, and wants custody of her grandchildren. Meanwhile, Jane is dealing with the reveal that Perry was the rapist that fathered her son, and has to deal with Mary Louise’s prying and victim blaming. To say season 2 has been juicy is putting it mildly.

One would expect that this season would end with as big a bang as the first season of Big Little Lies, and Woodley may have just spoiled what that big event is ahead of the season finale this coming Sunday. In her interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! - which can be watched below - Kimmel mentioned that HBO were being so secretive about the season 2 finale they hadn’t even sent him a promotional clip to show. Woodley replied that she had permission from HBO to reveal a little bit of information about the finale, stating:

At first glance, it seems like a massive spoiler and quite strange that HBO would approve Woodley to reveal such a big moment. Picking her statement apart, however, it might not be that big a spoiler. Note Woodley says it’s a cliffhanger but it takes place at the beginning of the episode. Technically, that’s not a cliffhanger - as Kimmel points out - so it doesn’t necessarily spoil the ending of season 2. Furthermore, letting Woodley drop a major spoiler wouldn’t be in-keeping with how secretive HBO has been about the finale with regards to not providing Kimmel with a promo clip.

“In the beginning of the next episode - it’s a little bit of a cliffhanger - but all of the women go to visit Perry’s grave and his body is missing.”

Regardless of whether Woodley’s reveal really is a massive spoiler, the fact that Perry’s body goes missing throws up a whole lot of questions. Has he been exhumed by police investigating his death? Has Mary Louise gone mad with grief and dug up his body herself? Has a zombie virus hit Monterey? The last one isn’t likely, of course, but either way it’s going to have big ramifications for the Monterey Five. As there are currently no plans for a third season of the show, it would seem there’s a lot of wrapping up to do in one episode. And if an event as big as Perry’s body going missing isn’t considered a major spoiler by HBO, then Big Little Lies fans are in for one hell of a season 2 finale.
