Will there be a Big Little Lies season 3, and if so, when can fans expect it? HBO’s hit series based on the novel by Liane Moriarty boasts an all-star cast of Hollywood’s top female talent including Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz. Meryl Streep upped the ante by joining the cast in Big Little Lies season 2 to antagonize the Monterey Five.
Big Little Lies season 2 picked up where season 1 left off as the Monterey Five attempt to move on in the wake of covering up the murder of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård), the abusive husband of Celeste (Kidman) who also raped Jane Chapman (Woodley) and fathered her son Ziggy (Iain Armitage). Meanwhile, Bonnie (Kravitz) has the most difficulty coping with her pivotal role in Perry’s death and has to face her traumatic past with her mother Elizabeth (Crystal Fox). Madeline (Witherspoon) attempts to repair her marriage to Ed (Adam Scott) when he learns she cheated on him and Renata (Dern) discovers her husband Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling) was an embezzler who lost their fortune. Worst of all, Perry’s fearsome and relentless mother Mary Louise (Streep) moved to Monterey to learn the truth about her son’s death and she attempts to take custody of Perry’s sons from Celeste.
Unfortunately, Big Little Lies season 2 has also courted controversy because it doesn’t reflect the creative vision of director Andrea Arnold, who helmed every episode. Instead, Big Little Lies season 2 was edited to match the tone set by season 1’s director Jean-Marc Vallée and Arnold was reportedly not told this would be the plan ahead of time. As a result, some critics have taken season 2 to task for not being as good as season 1. Regardless, Big Little Lies has emerged as one of HBO’s prestige series. Here’s everything we know about the possibility of Big Little Lies season 3.
Big Little Lies Season 3 Renewal Updates
As of now, there are no plans for Big Little Lies season 3. Earlier this year, HBO President Casey Bloys told TV Line that a third season is “not realistic”. Bloys cited the fact that Witherspoon, Kidman, Dern, Kravitz, and Woodley are some of the busiest actresses in Hollywood and coordinating their schedules would be difficult. Kidman echoed Bloys sentiments to Variety, “I think it would simply be hard to get the whole group together… But we would love to do it.”
Since the only thing preventing Big Little Lies season 3 is scheduling, fans shouldn’t lose out hope. The actors are all willing to come back and they’ve all managed to coordinate their busy schedules to come together twice already, so Big Little Lies season 3 is not entirely out of the question if the stars align.
Big Little Lies Season 2 Is The End (For Now)
Big Little Lies season 1 ended on the lie itself - the death of Perry Wright that the Monterey Five covered up - but it was originally intended as a one-off. Although he feared coming back could be a mistake, Big Little Lies season 2 came about because David E. Kelley couldn’t resist the chance to bring in Meryl Streep to play Mary Louise. In addition, author Liane Moriarty wrote a series of novellas that became the basis of Big Little Lies season 2’s storyline.
For now, Big Little Lies season 2 is the end of the story of the Monterey Five and will provide a sense of closure for the troubled group of California mothers. Then again, the producers made the same claim at the end of Big Little Lies season 1 so fans shouldn’t lose out hope for another season down the line.
Big Little Lies Season 3 Story Details
Big Little Lies season 2 culminates with Celeste and Mary Louise in battling in court over custody of twins Josh and Max - with the truth about Perry’s murder threatening to be revealed at any moment. However, Shailene Woodley may have dropped a big spoiler about the season 2 finale which, if true, sounds like an irresistible setup for Big Little Lies season 3.
