Better Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould discusses when would be the right time to call it quits. Following up one of the greatest television shows ever made is no easy feat. When Breaking Bad ended, it left a considerable gap in the TV landscape. The series, after all, helped usher in a golden age of television, and its departure left many wondering how anyone could ever follow it up.
While many were hesitant about the viability of extending the Breaking Bad brand, over the last three seasons Better Call Saul has transformed into something truly unique and special on its own. Series star Bob Odenkirk (With Bob and David) has helped bring a new dimension of drama into the world introduced by Breaking Bad. Now, as season 3 is gearing up for the end, the question of how long the show can continue is starting to get asked more and more.
In a new interview with Uproxx, series producer (and creator of Saul Goodman) Peter Gould gave some indication of how much longer they plan to continue. While his answers were far from concrete, they suggest that we should get used to the idea of Saul leaving our lives sooner rather than later. According to Gould:
That doesn’t mean fans should worry that this season will be the last we see of Jimmy McGill’s evolution into Saul Goodman. While no announcement has yet been made about season 4, Better Call Saul is still performing well for AMC and is a perennial awards contender, meaning the prospect of at least one more season seems pretty good.
“We all had lunch together just a couple of weeks ago, and that was one of the main questions we were asking ourselves: How much story is there? I think we’re getting a better idea. I will say I think this show has a definitely limit to it. It’s a story with a beginning and a middle and a definite end. I have to say, I would rather have it end too soon than go on too long. It’s the old showbiz adage: ‘Leave them wanting more.’ I would rather have people wish there had been more seasons than them going, ‘Oh, is that still on?’”
So how long can we expect Better Call Saul to last? Breaking Bad, despite its last season being broken up over two years, only ran for five seasons, and it makes sense to keep Saul around that limit. That means an order of seasons 4 and 5 could be a possibility. With any luck AMC will make an announcement about the future of the series before the season 3 finale.
